Welcome to the seventh installment of our “Caddie Confidential” series, with monthly, inside-the-ropes perspective from dozens of Tour caddies on rotating golf topics. Up this month: “player feuds” and whether or not they’re good for the game.
One of the biggest stories in golf this year has been the ongoing feud between Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau that just doesn’t seem to want to go away.
And we’re here for it. It’s entertaining, it’s fun and — like any feud — goes a little too far sometimes.
Say what you want about the feud — and many have — but there’s no denying it’s brought quite a bit more attention to the game.
But what do caddies think?
We polled nearly four dozen PGA Tour caddies to get their opinion on a variety of questions related to player feuds, promising them all anonymity in an effort to get their most honest answers. Let’s dive in to what they told us.
We have to ask: Are you #TeamBryson, #TeamBrooks or neither?
- 8.7% of caddies say they are #TeamBryson
- 17.4% of caddies say they are #TeamBrooks
- 73.9% of caddies say they are neither
As you can see from the poll, an overwhelming majority of caddies couldn’t care less about the feud.
“They’re not gonna help me or my player play any better,” one caddie said.
“Brooks has got too big for his boots,” another caddie told us. “He used to be a nice guy, but all this game has gone to his head.”
Tell us why you’re for/against Koepka, DeChambeau – or both.
Check out this selection of responses from caddies:
I’m Team Brooks because I think he’s funny and cool.
It’s their feud. I do not know the details on why or how it got started so I cannot form an opinion.
I don’t really know either of them, so I don’t really care for the feud.
Wow. Grow up! One’s jealous the other one’s smarter! The other one’s socially inept. At least Phil kept Tiger/Phil interesting.
There’s no place in the game for all this social drama.
I know and like both players, but I feel both have shown a little immaturity at times during this conflict. And sometimes both have been really funny, but I don’t like it when it’s not genuine.
I enjoy the fun feud to be honest, but I hope it doesn’t distract from their play or how good they both are.
I have no allegiance to either person.
I’m not a fan of Bryson.
They’re both muppets.
Bryson is a dick to his caddies.
