Watch: Caddie Steve Lohmeyer talks about 3M Open win with Matthew Wolff
In one of the most exhilarating finishes on the PGA Tour this season, Matthew Wolff — making just his third start as a professional — buried a long eagle putt on the 72nd hole at TPC Twin Cities on Sunday to win the 3M Open by a single shot over Bryson DeChambeau, who eagled the same hole moments earlier, and Colin Morikawa.
Wolff, the 2019 NCAA Division I individual champion at Oklahoma State University and Haskins Award winner (top college golfer in the U.S.), turned pro just weeks ago at the Travelers Championship. He initially hired veteran J.P. Fitzgerald — Rory McIlroy’s former caddie — to be his looper.
After two starts together at the Travelers (T80 for Wolff) and the Rocket Mortgage Classic (missed cut), Wolff decided to move on from Fitzgerald. The Friday of that missed cut at Rocket Mortgage, Wolff put in a call to Steve Lohmeyer and asked if he’d be available to caddie the following week in Minnesota at the 3M Open.
“Him saving me,” is how Lohmeyer described the call from Wolff. “I was debating whether or not I was going to stay in caddying, or go back to Scottsdale and get a real job. But he called me and now the rest is history.”
A little more than a week after the call, the pair was victorious in their first tournament as a team.
With the win, Wolff became the first player since Billy Hurley III in 2016 to win while playing on a sponsor’s exemption. Now, Wolff is a full PGA Tour member and will enjoy a two-year exemption.
